Esk Offshore is preparing one of its Swarf Recovery Units for a further mobilisation to Germany, following the performance achieved during its earlier campaign.

The unit was developed around a straightforward requirement: recover swarf effectively, maintain the flow required by the milling operation and make the system practical for the personnel operating it.

Its three-stage separation process removes larger material before fluid passes through the magnetic drum and probe magnets, allowing the cleaned fluid to be returned to the system.

But performance is only part of the design.

Esk has also looked closely at how swarf recovery equipment is operated offshore. The unit incorporates an internal operating compartment, allowing personnel to monitor the process away from direct exposure to the weather. Key equipment is positioned to improve visibility and accessibility, reducing the need for unnecessary handling around hot fluid.

During its previous German campaign, the operation progressed faster than originally anticipated, providing valuable field evidence for the system and helping Esk continue to refine the design based on what happens offshore rather than what works on paper.

The next mobilisation will build on that experience as Esk continues to establish the Swarf Recovery Unit across P&A and well operations internationally.

For us, that is what equipment development should look like: use it, learn from it, improve it and send it back out better.

Esk has confirmed the forthcoming Germany mobilisation, while the first campaign was completed in four weeks against an anticipated six-to-eight-week programme.
